Woohoo! I've hit pattern number 200! Join this celebration of a milestone with your own Woohoo Pompom Hat – a quirky, fun knit that's quick and satisfying.
Basic cable techniques, with a little unexpected curve thrown in, keep your knitting (and your life) exciting and interesting. Knit this hat seamlessly in the round, beginning with the ribbed band, which then flows right into the cable design.
The hat finishes with a slight slouch, a gently shaped crown, and a fluffy pompom. One size easily fits teenagers to adults and only uses two balls of the Aran-weight yarn or one hank of Malabrigo Worsted.
Finished Knit Measurements: Approx 17 ½" [44.5 cm] around bottom opening, unstretched; 9 ½" [24 cm] height. One size fits most teenagers to Adults.
Yarn Used: DROPS Nepal (65% Wool/35% Alpaca); 1.76 oz/50 g [82 yds/75 m] per ball): 2 balls in color 0300 Beige Mix. Will work with Malabrigo Yarn Merino Worsted as well!
Pattern Gauge: 18 sts = 3 ½" [9 cm] and 22 rnds = approx 4" [10 cm] in Braided Cable st patt, blocked.
Yarn Label Gauge and Information: An Aran-weight yarn in a soft merino wool or wool/alpaca blend with a gauge of 17 sts = 4" [10 cm] on size 8 [5 mm] needles.
Total Yardage Required: 164 yds [150 m] including pompom.
Some suggested yarn substitutes to try:
Malabrigo Yarn Merino Worsted - 1 hank.
Please remember to purchase enough of the substitute yarn based on yardage, not number of hanks/balls.

I have now made two of these hats!! I loved the first one, but the second one is even better! I shortened it by only working 4 rows of ribbing (instead of 8) and only working the decrease rows at the top (omitting the rows that didn't include decreases). Both my daughters LOVE them!
