Product Description

Three beginner scarves and one beginner cowl are included in this pattern set:

1) Garter Stitch Cowl: This simple cowl is knit in Garter stitch (knitting every row) using a bulky yarn for fast results. Then, the cast on and bound off edges are sewn together to form the cowl. This great one or two-skein project knits up quickly and is an ideal first project.

Gauge(s):
Pattern Gauge: 12 sts = 24 rows = 4" [10 cm] in Garter stitch.

2) Garter Stitch Scarf: This simple scarf is the perfect first project! All the rows are knit, which gives you rows and rows to practice your knit stitch and establish a relaxing rhythm with your knitting. Plus, the resulting Garter stitch fabric looks the same on both sides and lays flat. Length is easily adjusted based on how much yarn you have. The sample is knit in a bulky-weight yarn that is a blend of wool and mohair. Other bulky-weight yarns can easily be substituted.

Finished Knit Measurements: 7" [18 cm] width x 48 ¾" [124 cm] length.

3) Worsted-Weight Striped Scarf: This beautifully simple striped scarf features color blocked ends and easy Garter stitch. It begins with knitting every row in your first color. Then, the second color is added in and alternated with the first every two rows. By doing this, the color not in use can easily be carried along the edge. After the striped section is done, the scarf finishes with a small color block of the second color. The Garter stitch texture perfectly complements the softness of the Flax Down yarn. Once you feel this scarf, you'll certainly want to knit and wear it!

4) Ribbed Scarf: Once you're ready to tackle the purl and knit stitch together in one row, you can try out this ribbed scarf. Ribbing (alternating knit and purl stitches) is a very popular scarf stitch pattern, as it looks the same on both sides and lays flat. The main thing to remember is to always bring the yarn to the back before a knit stitch and to the front before a purl stitch. It takes a little practice, but once you get into the rhythm of it, ribbing can move along quite quickly. Ribbing produces a very stretchy fabric widthwise, which is why it's often used for the cuffs and waist of a sweater. For this scarf, a little of the stretchiness is counteracted by blocking (steam ironing) the scarf while it is slightly stretched and pinned out widthwise. This allows the purl stitches to show through better in the finished scarf.

Finished Knit Measurements: approx 6 ¾" [17 cm] width x 56 ¼" [143 cm] length.
