A simple hat, updated with a deep, ribbed foldover brim, is a very versatile pattern to have on hand. It’s also a nice option if you’re still new to knitting, but ready for a smaller project that combines a few different stitch techniques.
A big range of sizes - Preemie to Adult - are included to give you many options. This pattern will come in handy for quick gifts too, only needing a small amount of yarn (especially for the smaller sizes). You might even have yarn in your stash ready to be used, like I certainly did!
The hat is worked in the round for easy finishing, starting with the ribbing. Then, switch to plain knit rounds until you reach the crown shaping. For the nicely rounded crown, stitch markers and basic knit 2 together decreases make it easy and straight-forward.
These hats work up beautifully in a variety of worsted-weight yarns. I knit up the samples here in an alpaca yarn and a cotton blend. Suggested yarn substitutions are listed below.
The rolled brim version of this hat (#375 Easy Knit Hat), which is even easier as it does not include ribbing, is available as a separate pattern.
